SLEEPER FACTORY AT BESCOT – Make your voice heard

UPDATE - 30 August 2019

Network Rail have submitted their planning application to site their new sleeper factory in Bescot.  Many of you have been in touch expressing concerns on the adverse impact the proposed Network Rail sleeper factory would have on Bescot and the surrounding areas. It's time to have your say.

The application is available on Sandwell Council’s website and you can send your views to planning@sandwell.gov.uk or write to: Planning Department, Sandwell Council House, PO Box 2374, Oldbury, West Midlands B69 3DE.

If you’d like to discuss this further, I am hosting a residents’ meeting at 4pm on Friday 11th October in Friar Park Millennium Centre and hope that you will be able to attend. Please RSVP to: action@tom-watson.com if so.

Last week I wrote to Boris Johnson asking that he include the proposed Bescot Sleeper Factory in the government’s announced HS2 Review. I outlined just how opposed local residents were to the scheme, and that in light of the HS2 review, it was neither economical or sensible.

I also met with the Wednesbury Action Group (WAG), set up and coordinated by active local residents, and heard their deeply held concerns on the issues of health, air and noise pollution, traffic congestion and property values. I know there is particular concern that the factory would be near many local schools.

Together with Councillor colleagues, I have written to constituents in the affected wards of Friar Park, Hateley Heath, Charlemont, Great Barr and Yew Tree and West Bromwich Central encouraging locals to submit their views to the public consultation.

Like the WAG, we do not believe Bescot is the right place for this factory. It will increase pollution, road congestion and impact on the health of our children and all local residents.

The application is available on Sandwell Council’s website and you can send your views to planning@sandwell.gov.uk or write to: Planning Department, Sandwell Council House, PO Box 2374, Oldbury, West Midlands B69 3DE.

Every voice matters in this consultation. We will be submitting our views shortly and hope that you will do the same.

Meanwhile, I encourage all to review the plans on Sandwell Council’s website and take a few minutes to express your views on the planning application.

Please let me know your views on the application by Network Rail to open a concrete sleeper factory in Bescot
